National Flood Clean-up Continues

Article posted on 14 January 2014

As many homes across the UK are recovering from the damage caused by the recent stormy weather, people are counting the cost of the repair to their homes and personal contents.

The Environment Agency warned that the flooding risk has not passed as the River Thames reached its highest level for 10 years. There are still some 50 flood warnings in place, mostly across the south east and south west of the UK, with the agency calling on people to “remain vigilant”.

More rain is forecast for this week, which will fall on saturated ground as swollen rivers struggle to recover from the storms which lashed Britain over the festive period. Although the levels of many rivers have started to subside, the Thames at certain points remains at its highest since 2003.

Riverside home owners, including some of the country’s wealthiest residents, have been told that they are not out of danger yet.

Levels are still high in parts of Hampshire, West Berkshire, Surrey, West Sussex, Wiltshire and along the Severn in Worcester and Gloucestershire. Water levels are high across the Somerset Levels, where some villages have been cut off by flood water, but have stabilised and in some places are starting to fall due to pumping of water and reduced flows entering the moors.

Other areas that have been hit by the tidal floods include Boston, Cromer, Great Yarmouth, Somerset, Lowestoft, Surrey, Brancaster, Kent, Cornwall, Chertsey, Aberystwyth, Newcastle, Tewksbury, Cumbria, Gloucestershire, Brighton, Ovingham, Northumberland, Norfolk, Felixstowe, Suffolk, Oxford, Cambridgeshire, Thames, Ditton, Wales, Cornwall and Essex.

It is estimated that Nearly 9,000 households in flood-prone areas in England and Wales will not be covered by the government’s new flood insurance agreement.
